Stop by George’s OKC
Meet the Local Kings of Whiskey and Insta
In a time when SQ 792, COVID, and general economic malaise could cause an Oklahoma liquor store to collapse, George’s Liquor is thriving. Located on 1020 W Main St in downtown OKC, the decades old George’s Liquor, an automotive repair shop in its previous life, has been revived by a savvy young bunch into a shop that is both hip and utilitarian.
Owner/operator Cody Wilson, previously a local beer rep, experienced an existential crisis and decided to use his knowledge to run his own shop. It opened at a precarious time, right when the booze laws were changing, and the decision seemed quixotic as other liquor stores were shuttering their doors.
Despite the inauspicious timing, their policy of taking customer requests and fitting whatever they can get their hands on into the cozy brick room helped build their regulars. Leaning in to offering deliveries plus selling cigars, vinyl records, and exclusive local craft beer enabled their business to set itself apart.
But even if you’ve never stepped foot into George’s, you may know the crew from their hilarious Instagram videos. Independent film director Mickey Reese creates all their content from his phone, including all the camera work, editing, and music. Often, week-long stories play out in your feed involving such characters as the down on his luck liquor rep Jim Owens, or the thrilling returns of Sherman Week.
Whether you’re looking for a fresh pet-nat, grower champagne, or a rare and allocated bourbon, George’s has got you covered.
