Bourbon-Spiked Mexican Hot Chocolate

As soon as the weather begins to cool, Mexican hot chocolate makes an appearance in our house. It’s an old childhood favorite that I have made my own over the years. This grown-up version is spiked with a little bourbon for extra warmth. The fragrant orange and the spices will remind you why you love this season so much!

Ingredients

SERVINGS: 4 Serving(s)
  • 1 cup dark chocolate (chips will work if they are good quality)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • zest of 1 orange
  • 3 chunks of crystallized ginger
  • Dash of salt
  • 1 star anise pod
  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 8 tablespoons bourbon

Instructions

METHOD

In a small saucepan, add milk and all of the spices (everything but the bourbon and chocolate). Bring to gentle boil over low heat (this will allow the spices to infuse the milk). Once the milk is starting to boil and becomes fragrant, carefully add the chocolate. Whisk until combined and frothy. Line up four mugs and pour 2 tablespoons of bourbon in each. Top each mug off with hot chocolate and enjoy immediately!
