Flower & Flour produces three of life’s greatest pleasures: that which is beautiful, that which is sweet, and that which is caffeinated. The shop that offers all of the above, plus gifts, was started by friends Kaleo Maclay, Matthew Maclay, and Kelly Long in an effort to combine their individual passions into one cozy location in OKC’s Deep Deuce neighborhood.

“We started to talk about the idea of combining flowers and a bakery. My husband, Matthew, had been into coffee, he worked in the coffee business, and felt like he wanted to venture into starting a coffee shop as well,” said Kaleo. “We decided to blend the three! Coffee, bakery and blooms! We were able to each contribute what we loved and combine it into one central concept — Flower & Flour!”

Kelly found a great location in Deep Deuce, and they signed a lease...one week before a pandemic hit. The unexpected circumstances gave them lots of time to bring their concept and vision to life. They opened in October of 2020 and have enjoyed becoming a part of the Deep Deuce neighborhood.

Kaleo handles the “flour” side of the business, and all the baked goods are made fresh daily in the shop. They offer an assortment, including their popular chocolate chunk and Hawaiian sea salt cookies, croissants, scrumptious raspberry jam bars, blueberry and rosemary parmesan scones, moist chocolate brownie muffins, and cakes. Gluten-free options are available as well.

“I call the pastries my labor of love, they are some of my favorite recipes and now I get to share them withevery customer who walks through the door,” says Kaleo. “I wanted the bakery of Flower & Flour to make you feel at home, even in a coffee shop.”

Popular drinks include classic cortados and cold brews made with Stumptown Coffee Beans, as well as their prana chai, sourced from Australia, made with fresh spices and infused with honey.

“We source our coffee from Stumptown Coffee Roasters out of Portland, OR; they have been a heavy hitter in the coffee world for a little over 20 years!” says Matthew. “Kaleo and I love to travel when we can and Stumptown is always one of our favorite cafes to go to, especially the one connected to the Ace Hotel in New York. Every time we’ve gone — the people, the coffee, the music, and just overall vibe has hit the spot and so we knew that we wanted to bring that same kind of drink and vibe experience to the city we love.”

On the “flower” side of Flower & Flour, Kelly’s passion and knowledge is clear. “I wanted to incorporate blooms that you don’t see everywhere. I love sourcing from Holland, Japan, California Rose Gardens, local Oklahoma farms, and more,” says Kelly. “I love getting in unique items that you can’t find at the grocery store. Currently, we have some beautiful early spring blooms and our most popular blooms have been peonies, sweet peas, garden roses, and people love our palm leaves and dried items as well.”

Attending events around town, you may have gotten glimpses of Kelly’s work as the owner of her wedding floral boutique, Poppy Lane Design, for more than fifteen years. Now, Flower & Flour has made her wedding and event arrangements an option for peoples’ homes. There are even plans to look at hosting flower arranging classes and small events in the future, when it’s appropriate and safe again.
