Jake Keyes Builds a Tribal Brewery Based on a Shared Passion

Skydance Brewing Co founder and owner, Jake Keyes, is nothing if not intentional. From the design of the taproom to the quality of the craft beer produced, Keyes’ commitment to passion and perfection is clear.

The Skydance double-story taproom is separated from the glistening production plant by a thick pane of glass. The visible, substantial fermenters and canning lines give a glimpse into the arduous operation of brewing a high-quality beer, some decades in the making. Football games, live music, work meetings, and vibrant works by indigenous artists fill the taproom’s niches while the Skydance brewing team works diligently to create the delicious variety of beers welcoming guests to the Tribal bar.

Keyes began brewing as a young man when he discovered the shared passion with his father via a garage brewing kit. Now, the once hobby has become his life. From their seasonal small-batch beers to their twist on classics like India pale ales, oatmeal stouts, amber ales, Skydance suits many palates. As compliments pour in about their cozy, inspired interiors and famous Fancy Dance beer, Keyes is encouraged but remains humble.

When Keyes remembers tribulations from his past, he thinks fondly of how his late father’s influence on his values has helped him make life-changing decisions, saying, “You take how you were raised with you and that’s how you get intuition. So you gotta trust it was right.” From a childhood living in a trailer to founding a flourishing brewery, doing his homework and believing in his own potential granted him a fruitful future.

Keyes’ is a story of persistence and tenacity, even though his demeanor is calm and caring. He makes the most of his father’s recent passing by focusing on what he can achieve while honoring the people and community who raised him. Given his Native roots and deep consideration for Tribal communities, he reflects on how to best represent his culture. Keyes wants his narrative to “allow others to see themselves reflected in that journey.’’ When thinking of his children, Keyes considers the relationship between passion and success, and prompts, “What is ‘successful’? Happiness, freedom, and sovereignty. That’s what I want for my kids.”

Ultimately, he’s focused on the process more than the success. “I always thought there would be this moment where I’d be sitting here, and, in tears maybe, saying ‘Wow, I can’t believe I did it’. And there are little doses of it, but starting a business is non-stop.” When he gives an honest look into the trials he’s faced, there’s never a tinge of complaint or regret. What started as a family project between father and son is now a thriving business based on dedication, respect, and intuition.
