In Memorium, Chef Scotty Irani
On the morning of Thursday, April 7, 2022, Scotty Irani, local chef, friend to many, and writer for this publication, died of pancreatic cancer at age 52. In addition to his work as a personal and professional chef and contributor to television stations KFOR and KAUT, Scotty’s work with EdibleOKC was significant, authoring dozens of recipes and articles and receiving Edible Communities Inc. 2016 readers’ and critics’ choice awards for his piece, “Locally Global,” published in our November/ December 2015 issue.
Most important were the relationships Scotty created. One cannot read tributes in his honor without being reminded of his humor, creativity, and care for those around him. Former publishers and creators of EdibleOKC, Aaron and Jen Snow, remember him fondly:
“From the moment we met Scotty, he became like family. He was so talented as a chef, yet so humble. Scotty was always willing to share his craft with anyone and lend a hand to help them succeed. His love for our local food community shined on and off the pages of EdibleOKC. We will miss his contagious laugh, his corny jokes, his radiant smile, his sincere kindness, and his love. Our sincerest condolences to his sweet family. We love you, Scotty. You were one of a kind!”
Shortly before his passing and in a conversation with a close friend, Scotty ruminated, “My family originated from Iranian Azerbaijan. It’s a beautiful place with green hills and olive trees. I imagine myself there, in a hobbit hut, surrounded by my poodles. My grandfather is there and over the hill come my friends, saying heyyyy.”
He will be deeply missed by the EdibleOKC community and the many others whose lives he impacted.
