“In America, the professional kitchen is the last refuge of the misfit” is a quote from the infamous scion of the service industry, Anthony Bourdain. While times have changed, there was once a beleaguered belief that if you had visible tattoos, you could never gain gainful employment. There has long been an association of rugged chefs with full-sleeves of knives or butchery images with dudes who have been to the county lockup at least once, but now it is more acceptable to bedazzle your body with art that reflects who you are.

This photo essay shows off some of our local talent who are passionate about what they do and decided to etch it on their bodies for life. There are few careers that inspire that amount of dedication, and even fewer that lend to a bouquet of artistic inspiration, like working with food and beverage.
