Your guide to eating out from a vegetarian who doesn’t want to cook.

Many vegetarians consider them their go-to meat replacement. Natural and unprocessed, mushrooms provide the delicious umami flavor so many of us crave. From soups and sides to entrees, these delicious fungi can be used in a multitude of ways. Read on and discover local restaurants that make mushrooms a main dish.

Mary Eddy’s Kitchen & Lounge

Inside the contemporary 21 C Hotel, Mary Eddy’s offers eclectic American cuisine in an open space adorned with lovely art. Formerly the Ford Motor Company assembly plant, the building combines original 100 year old interior quite nicely with updated modern furnishings. Mary Eddy’s mushroom entrée is the “Shrooms Crust.” In a similar style to a pizza, the Shrooms Crust combines roasted oyster mushrooms, creminis, ricotta, and thyme for an earthy yet light flavor. Enjoy with your favorite beverage, and afterwards take a tour of the extensive art collection on display.

Barrios Fine Mexican Dishes

One of the newest restaurants in town, Barrios offers upscale Mexican dining in the refurbished Swan’s Tire Store. However, the fantastic remodel would make one think this building was created for a modern restaurant. Their truly vegetarian dish (in other words, it doesn’t contain lard), is the Sweet Potato Sofrito and Wild Mushroom Sopes with Kale Slaw. In a beautiful presentation, the masa cup holds a combination of black beans, mushrooms, sweet potatoes, and kale slaw. This entrée provides a nice combination of flavors and textures without being as heavy as a traditional Mexican dish. Accompany it with one of their creative margaritas and you are set for a unique dining experience.

NOIR Bistro and Bar

In the somewhat under-the-radar Film Row district, Noir Bistro and Bar offers a sophisticated atmosphere and delicious food, using local and fresh ingredients. Attached to the Paramount Theatre and Cinema, Noir provides an opportunity to dine before enjoying a play or one of the many film festivals hosted by the Paramount Theatre. One of several vegetarian options, Isabella’s Vegan Spaghetti is a light and flavorful dish. It begins with spaghetti squash and is topped with grilled peppers and onions, grilled mushrooms marinated in balsamic vinegar, and a house-made marinara sauce. This meal is ideal for your pasta cravings when you don’t want the guilt of a carb overload. As you can tell by the name, vegans may partake as well, so bring your friends with dietary restrictions and take pleasure in Noir’s creative dishes. You may have one of the tastiest mushrooms you’ve ever tried.
