Angry Scotsman Brewing offers a unique combination of tried and true classics and appealing new combinations in a microbrewery with a down-to-red-dirt kind of atmosphere. It’s easy to see how owners Stephanie and Ross Harper have been inspired both by local flavors and their world travels.

Ross is the Scotsman from Glasgow who came to Stillwater for work after attending college in the states; Stephanie had moved away from Oklahoma but decided to move back after meeting Ross while she was back home visiting family.

Brewing started as a hobby for Ross, who has a background in chemistry, partially because in those days, it was a lot harder to find good beer options in Oklahoma, especially like the ones from pubs back home. Through that hobby, he formed great relationships with brewers that continue to this day.

“So the Oklahoma liquor laws started to change and I'd always kind of wanted to do the brewery,” explains Ross. “The nice thing about the Oklahoma beer community before the laws changed was that the homebrewer community and the pro-brewer community were fairly tight knit, so I had good connections.”

Their beer stylings consist of some under-represented traditional German lagers, ales, and porters. Their ESB beer, for example, is an English Style Pale Ale that tastes just like a classic pub pint and appropriately so, is only available in their tap room. It's that pub background that also gives their brewery more of a family feel to it. It’s a comfortable atmosphere with a backyard plus a beautiful view of the Oklahoma City skyline.

“He [Ross] always came from that European mindset of the pub. You come in, you bring your kids down, you can hang out even in the day whether you’re drinking or not. We didn’t want to go full old-world pub-style,” explains Stephanie. “But we wanted that same feeling of everyone is welcome to be here and we want to support the community.”

That welcoming mindset can be felt in their tap room, and their hope is to bring in a diverse group of people with a diverse selection of beers as well. A lot of the beers are more culinary minded as Ross enjoys experimenting with different flavor profiles. For instance, their Night Terror, a black IPA, has notes of citrus and chocolate balanced with variety of hops. Just the right amount of effervescence gives it a lighter feel than expected with that flavor combination.

Moving forward, Angry Scotsman will be having a huge October-fest party. They’ll also be holding a Beer Dinner on Sunday, October 22nd, with guest chefs Kamala Gamble and Barbara Mock from Kam’s Cookery putting together a five-course beer pairing menu for that event.
